Discourse now has a chat plugin:
I’ve been trying it out at https://community.tmpdir.org/ and it seems to be working well. Might be something to consider for this site. Integrated chat and forums is nice because you can easily move content from chat to topics and everything is in one place. Slack of course has its advantages too.
With discourse chat, you have the same great editing experience you get in discourse topic posts – its just markdown. Here is an example:

Keeping things markdown leads to a very natural flow of information from transient communication channels to more permanent:
chat message → forum topic → md doc in Git
